What is a Utility Markout

A utility markout is the process of identifying and marking the locations of underground utilities before any digging or excavation work begins. It’s sometimes also called a utility locate. The purpose is to prevent accidental damage to utilities like:

  • Gas lines
  • Water pipes
  • Sewer lines
  • Electrical cables
  • Telecommunication lines

Here’s how it usually works:

  1. Call Before You Dig: In the U.S., most states require you to contact a one-call center (like 811) before excavation.
  2. Notification: You provide the location, type of work, and timing of the excavation.
  3. Marking: Utility companies or locators come out and mark the ground with colored flags or paint, each color representing a different type of utility.
  4. Valid Period: The markout is usually valid for a certain period (varies by state), after which it may need to be renewed if the excavation hasn’t occurred.

⚠️ Why it matters: Hitting a utility can cause injuries, property damage, legal issues, and fines.
